Jellyfin vs. Plex: An Honest Take

An honest Jellyfin vs Plex comparison after using both: cloud logins, ads pushed onto your dashboard, transcoding paywalls and why I still picked Jellyfin.

As I mentioned in my Jellyfin setup guide, I started with Jellyfin purely on a recommendation, entirely unaware of Plex. Having researched both extensively since then, I wouldn’t trade Jellyfin for anything.

The Breakdown:

  • Plex: Highly polished, great apps for older Smart TVs. However, they force you to log in via their cloud servers, push free ad-supported streaming content onto your dashboard, and charge you for a “Plex Pass” to use hardware video transcoding.
  • Jellyfin: Completely free, open-source, and entirely local. Your server doesn’t phone home to a corporate entity, and hardware transcoding is included out of the box.
