CasaOS vs. Portainer vs. CLI

CasaOS, Portainer or plain Docker Compose? When a GUI dashboard helps, when it gets in the way, and why CasaOS doesn't lock you in.

If you are intimidated by the Linux command line, CasaOS is a godsend.

It acts as a beautiful, lightweight GUI layered over Debian/Ubuntu. It gives you a sleek dashboard, one-click app installs, and easy widget management. It is what I use as my daily driver interface today.

However, as you grow (like my struggle with custom AI containers), you will eventually need to bypass the basic UI and deploy custom compose.yaml files via the terminal — here is the Compose template I use for that.

The beauty of CasaOS is that it doesn’t lock you in. You can run custom CLI Docker containers in the background, and CasaOS is smart enough to detect them and display them on your visual dashboard anyway!
